A City Reinventing Itself – from Industry to Diversity

Essen is a city with more than a thousand years of history and an astonishing wealth of talent. Admittedly, Rome is older. But Essen has probably reinvented itself more often than other cities have updated their image. By Sigrid Riewe-Scholz

Rather than coal and steel, it all began with strong female figures: an abbey for women laid the foundation for the city in the ninth century – showing early on that the people here have a great flair for organisation and creative energy. Later came the famous “black gold”, which made Essen one of Europe’s most important industrial locations. Names like Krupp are still synonymous with this era.

And today? The city’s industrial heritage is being transformed into a strikingly vibrant present. Instead of miners, you will now find art, design and visitors eager to explore at the Zeche Zollverein, once a symbol of coal production. Structural transformation – done in style.

Essen offers both high culture and everyday experience. The Folkwang Museum exhibits international art, grand operas are performed in the Aalto Theatre – and a few streets away, in the relaxed vibe of the “Rü” district, what starts as a quick coffee can easily become an entire evening.

For anyone who still thinks the Ruhr region is drab and colourless, a trip to Lake Baldeney is a must. Here you can sail, cycle and enjoy the sunset – without any industrial backdrop. Or lose yourself in Grugapark – which has so much greenery you would almost forget you are in a major city.

With a population of around 580,000 people from more than 170 countries and a good helping of Ruhr region charm, Essen is now a metropolis that thrives on cultural, economic and culinary diversity. From chip shops to award-winning cuisine, you will find it all here. Yes, you can definitely eat well in Essen, which is only fitting considering Essen is also the German word for food!

Essentially, Essen is not a city that relies on showy self-promotion: instead, it quietly draws you in – and leaves a truly lasting impression.
